About A. I Friedman
Started in 1929, A.I. Friedman is a privately owned company with it’s headquarters in Manhattan. We employ approximately 175 people and rank in the top 5 firms nationally in terms of size in the art material industry.
Over the past several years, we have made substantial investments in new communication systems, computer systems, facilities and people. We believe these investments will enable the company to continue to grow through this decade and beyond.
Strategically, A.I. Friedman views its commercial business as a service business rather
than a distribution business. Although we earn our income by distributing product, our primary task is to sell the service of art supplies rather than the product. Our customer focus is narrowly defined to those creating commercial art while our product mix is broadly defined to encompass most anything that customer might need. This strategic positioning leads to a culture within A.I. Friedman that is clearly customer focused. Getting the customer what they need when they need it, and supplying helpful information and advice is our goal.
A.I. Friedman inventories approximately 50,000 SKU’s in its Manhattan warehouse, The inventory is a mix of traditional art materials, computer graphic supplies, and office products. Custom Framing is accomplished on site as well. Additionally, because of our service focus, approximately 20% of our business is in special order items that we research and source for our customers.
The inventory, as well as every other part of the business is managed through a fully integrated AS400 based system. Our customized software carefully bridges the requirements of a controlled environment and the flexibility to meet the varied requirements of our customer.
Like any successful organization, people are the single most important reason for A.I. Friedman’s success. Our sales staff is a recognized industry leader and the years of training and organization provides for an internal support staff to rival any in the industry. A.I. Friedman is proud of the fact that most of our management staff came up through the ranks.
A.I. Friedman is proud of the fact that most of our management staff came up through the ranks. As a middle market company, there is
not a standardized "ladder" for corporate advancement, rather individuals advance based upon their abilities and the needs of the organization.
While there is a clear difference in typical career paths in retail vs. commercial (business to business), starting in one area does not rule out switching to another.
A.I. Friedman believes that the more knowledge a person has, the more value they bring to the organization and themselves. For that reason,
we train, depending upon the position, between 1 and 6 months rotating through various departments within the organization.
A.I. Friedman is always looking for bright, energetic people who want to build a career with us. Listed below are some of the positions we
typically look to fill. If you would like to explore the possibilities at A.I. Friedman, please send your resume and a letter to;
